The map

Where layby happens — and where it should.

Africa's retailers run layby on paper. We're rebuilding it as software. Hover any country to see its status in our rollout.

Country pipeline

Where we go, and when.

Three tiers. Clear timelines. SADC first because of geographic + regulatory proximity; broader Africa second.

Proven behaviour

Layby is not an African invention.

The same constraint produces the same solution everywhere: people with income but no credit access, buying goods the retailer holds until they are paid for. It has a different name in every market — and almost nowhere does it run on software.

Southern Africa

lay-bye

Mainstream in the national chains. Shares its name with the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

Australia & New Zealand

lay-by

Where the word comes from — and codified in consumer law as its own kind of agreement, explicitly not credit.

Brazil

crediário · carnê

Since the 1950s. Store-run instalments tracked on a paper payment booklet, extended on the shop's relationship with the customer rather than a credit file.

Mexico

apartado

Instalments are a condition of the purchase rather than a perk offered on top of it.

Philippines

layaway

Interest-free instalments are standard at the major retailers, and dedicated layaway platforms already operate.

Indonesia

kredit barang

More than half of adults are unbanked. Paying over time is simply how phones, appliances and motorbikes get bought.

India & South Asia

chit funds

Rotating savings and credit associations, running across India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

United States & Canada

layaway

Never actually went away. It returns to the big chains every time consumer credit tightens.

These are not on our rollout map and are not counted in the 17 target markets above — Africa is where we operate. They are here because they answer the only question that matters about the model: is this a local quirk or a universal pattern? Every one of these markets runs pay-over-time retail on paper, booklets or a chat thread. The rails do not care which continent they are on.

Recent activity

Platform pulse.

A rolling log of what's happening across the Layby Africa network.

30 Jul 2026 💬 Payment questions answered automatically — "EcoCash details?" and "how much deposit?" now get the right store's account within seconds, on WhatsApp, without a person in the loop. Each tenant's own details, never another's.
Jul 2026 🏪 Capri Home Appliances onboarded — merchant #7, 81 products loaded and the storefront live. Seven storefronts now run on one codebase with strict per-tenant isolation.
Jul 2026 🚀 Marketplace scaled to 5 live storefronts — Appliance & Home, Beds, Sofa & Couch, Groceries and Restapedic, all on one unified cross-store cart at zimlayby.com.

17 May 2026 📈 Sofa & Couch Centre joined as Zimbabwe merchant #2. Brown-themed customer portal live within 4 days.
15 May 2026 📲 WhatsApp Cloud API live — 10 customer-journey templates approved by Meta. Reminders, receipts, payment confirmations now flow on the channel Zimbabweans actually use.
10 May 2026 🌍 Unified customer portal at zimlayby.com/me — one account spanning every merchant a customer ever lays-by with. Stripe/Amazon model for African retail.
May 2026 🇿🇼 Zimbabwe live. First country on Layby Africa. Appliance & Home operating as merchant zero — 7 years of retail layby experience translated into rails.
